Metro has declined to comment on reports that it is considering retaining its Real supermarket chain.

Reports in German newspaper Handelsblatt stated that Metro's chief executive Dr Eckhard Cordes is considering holding on to its Real supermarket chain.

The report said that Cordes has presented a plan to employees on the supervisory board, under which Real would remain part of Metro.

When contacted by just-food this afternoon (22 September), a spokesperson for Metro said the company cannot comment on the reports as this is confidential.

Cordes who yesterday (21 September) received support from its parent-company Haniel, which owns 34% of Metro, to extend his contract after days saying it did not want him to remain at the business beyond his current contract.
