Biscuit maker Nairn's Oatcakes has launched what it claims is the first gluten-free instant porridge on the UK market.

Gluten Free Easy Porridge is designed to be eaten at home or "on the go", Nairn's said today (13 March). Each pot requires hot water and is ready to eat in five minutes.

The pots are made using pure, wholegrain gluten free oats, sourced and farmed by a family of coeliacs.

Nairn's said the move into the instant breakfast market has been "a natural progression" for the Edinburgh-based brand, which already has Gluten Free Real Porridge Oats and Gluten Free Instant Porridge Oats in its free from offering.

The company opened a dedicated gluten free bakery in 2009. The new range is available in Tesco and Waitrose stores with an RRP of GBP1.50 (US$2.24) per pot.

Nairn’s Oatcakes Launch UK’s First ‘Free From’ Porridge Pot

12 March 2013

The UK’s number one oatcake brand, Nairn’s Oatcakes, has launched a ‘Gluten Free Easy Porridge’ – the first ‘free from’ instant porridge pot on the market.

The UK’s number one oatcake brand, Nairn’s Oatcakes, has launched a ‘Gluten Free Easy Porridge’ – the first ‘free from’ instant porridge pot on the market. This new product from Nairn’s is ideal for those in search of a hot, gluten free breakfast option and is easily portable, meaning it can be enjoyed on the go - whether it’s on the way to work or in the office.

Nairn's new tasty porridge pots have been developed as a convenient breakfast option. Easy to make, the pots simply require hot water and are ready to eat in less than five minutes. Breakfast is often the most difficult meal for coeliacs, or those on a gluten free diet, for which to find suitable ‘free from’ options. As a result, Nairn’s has created a convenient product which is simple to make with a great taste, as well as having all the natural goodness and health benefits of oats.

The porridge pots are made with pure, wholegrain gluten free oats. Nairn’s gluten free oats are reliably sourced and farmed by a family of coeliacs, plus all of Nairn’s gluten free products are made in a separate bakery and are accredited by Coeliac UK, making them safe, healthy and tasty.

Martyn Gray, Marketing Director at Nairn’s Oatcakes said: “Many coeliacs struggle to gain adequate nutrition, so a tasty, hot gluten free meal which fits in with their needs is a great start to the day. The porridge pots are packed full of complex carbohydrates and are a good source of soluble and insoluble fibre, giving you a natural and wholesome boost to help you get the most out of your day. The launch of our porridge pots is not only a natural step into the growing gluten free market, but also offers those on a gluten free diet, a healthy, enjoyable and convenient option.”

Nutritionist and ambassador for Nairn’s, Christine Bailey said: “Maintaining a healthy and nutritious gluten free diet doesn’t have to be difficult and with convenient products like the Nairn’s porridge pots available, coeliacs can enjoy healthy snacks which don’t compromise on taste. Starting the day with foods that provide slow release, natural energy, like oats, will sustain energy and blood sugar levels throughout the day and discourage the temptation to opt for unhealthy snacks. Porridge is an ideal food to keep you satisfied until lunchtime. In addition oats are packed with a whole range of nutrients including antioxidants to support your health.”

The move into the instant breakfast market has been a natural progression for the Edinburgh based brand, having Nairn’s Gluten Free Real Porridge Oats and Nairn’s Gluten Free Instant Porridge Oats amongst its Free From offering. In 2009, Nairn’s opened a dedicated gluten free bakery where the gluten free product range is subject to stringent testing and control.

Nairn’s Gluten Free Easy Porridge is available in Tesco and Waitrose and costs £1.50 per pot.

Nairn’s also produces a selection of oat based tasty treats including wholesome Oatcakes, Oaty Bakes, Oat Biscuits and gluten free cereals and oatcakes.
