Nestle - organic consumers in Spain

Food giant Nestlé has introduced a number of organic products to the Spanish market for the first time.

The products it has launched in Spain include the full range of baby food Naturnes Bio, as well as some organic coffee products.

Some 65% of the products will be manufactured in Nestlé's factories in Miajadas (Cáceres), La Penilla de Cayón (Cantabria), Sebares (Asturias) and Reus (Tarragona).

The company said the launch is in response to consumer demand.

"Nestlé has decided to bet heavily on organic products in our country," the company said in a statement.

Laurent Dereux, the CEO of Nestlé's Spanish arm, said: "Consumers demand more and more healthy and sustainable products."

It added it expects in five years organic products will contribute between 10% and 15% of its turnover in Spain.

Earlier this month Nestlé changed the recipes for the breakfast cereals it markets in Spain to make them healthier. It announced it was removing artificial flavours and colours from the Spanish range.

The Swiss group said it would also look to build on its recent efforts in Spain to reduce the amount of sugar in the cereals.

In February, Nestle's Brazilian arm announced plans to launch its first organic food line in that country.

The Switzerland-based company has been busy expanding its natural and organic offerings. Earlier this year, it bought a majority stake in Terrafertil, an Ecuadorian company selling natural and organic plant-based foods
