13,000 needy people will benefit each week from the donation today of a 17-tonne lorry from Kraft Foods UK to the food industry charity Grocery Aid. Today the lorry set off on its first duty, packed with goods donated from the food and grocery industry. Sainsbury's have donated £10,000 towards the cost of fuel for the year.

The lorry will deliver essential food and grocery products, for example, coffee, tea, custard, sugar, canned foods, household goods and cleaning products to Grocery Aid's five depots around the UK. These depots serve over 400 charities, including large charities such as The Salvation Army and smaller charities such as The Little Sisters of the Poor.

Steve Newiss, Customer Marketing Director for Kraft Foods said "Internationally Kraft Foods has a long tradition of supporting organisations that address critical human needs and in particular organisations involved in the provision of food. In the UK Kraft Foods supports local based charities providing food and assistance to help people in need. I am very pleased to be able to donate this vehicle to Grocery Aid to help in all the good work that it does throughout the UK."

Sister Nuala of The Little Sisters of the Poor in Greenock said "The meals are the highlight of the day, everyone looks forward to them and a chat with their friends. Thanks to Grocery Aid the meals are varied and nutritious."

Joanne Denney, Chief Executive IGD added "We are grateful to Kraft Foods for donating the lorry and to all the companies who regularly donate products to Grocery Aid. The lorry will enable us to distribute donations evenly throughout the country. All the charities we work with do much more than just feed people, they all help to rebuild the lives of the people they support. We also focus on helping smaller charities, who often have no regular grants. The donations from industry enable our charities to spend money that would normally go on basic living costs for other things, such as medical supplies, bedding and counselling."

Companies that currently donate products regularly to Grocery Aid include Birds Eye Wall's, British Sugar, Coca-Cola, Kellogg, Kraft Foods, Lever Brothers, Mars, McCain, Procter & Gamble, Tate & Lyle, United Biscuits, Varta and Walkers. Another 80 companies support Grocery Aid in other ways, with less regular product donations, staff or depot space.
