Waitrose sales up over 11% in Q1

Upmarket UK retailer Waitrose has booked an 11% increase in first-quarter sales, citing its pricing strategy and its online expansion.

The company said sales excluding fuel were up 11.1% for the 13 weeks to 27 April.

Waitrose said its "competitive price position" including the extension of its Brand Price Match comparison scheme helped it win new customers.

"What is so significant about our figures is that the vast majority of our growth has been achieved by an increase in volume sales from our established branches, with just one shop opening so far this financial year," financial director Tom Athron said.

The retailer added grocery sales via waitrose.com were up over 50% year-on-year.
