Jobs to go at Gad as pork giant battles to revitalise business

Staff at struggling French pork processor Gad have backed improved redundancy terms and lifted picket lines outside the company's premises.

Management and unions had agreed a deal a week ago but it was rejected by workers when put to a vote.

However, Gad said yesterday an improved offer, including a doubling of the planned compensation payment to redundant workers, was accepted.

Last month, a French court gave the green light to a rescue plan for Gad. The strategy involved around 900 job cuts, which triggered angry protests outside its two abattoirs, one of which is set to close.
