More than 20 of Tesco’s “largest food suppliers” are to publish data on the food waste from their own operations, the retail giant has announced.

Companies including 2 Sisters Food Group, ice cream supplier Froneri and UK meat processor Cranswick are among 24 businesses to have pledged to release the information “within 12 months”, Tesco said.

The suppliers, which also include meat companies Moy Park and Hilton Food Group, private-label groups Bakkavor and Greencore and organic dairy business Yeo Valley, will also look to meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal to halve food waste by 2030. Tesco said 23 of the suppliers would adopt the goal for their global operations with one looking to meet the target for its UK business. The retailer did not disclose the identity of the latter.

Tesco said the move represented the first “supplier agreement struck between a major retailer and its food suppliers”.

Dave Lewis, Tesco’s CEO, added: “Great progress has been made, but the reality is that we need many more companies, countries or cities committing to halve food waste by 2030, measuring and publishing their data and acting on that insight to tackle food waste. I am delighted that many of our major suppliers have taken this important step so we can work in partnership to reduce food waste.”
