Tesco Q1 sales in Slovakia fell after year of higher revenue

Tesco is to start a click-and-collect service in Slovakia as part of a fresh multichannel push in the country.

The UK retailer, which has 141 stores in the European country, is offering the service at stores in Kosice and Nitra from next week.

Tesco said it will also expand home delivery to the two cities; it first launched its online service in the Slovak capital of Bratislava last October.

Last month, Tesco reported a fall in first-quarter sales in Slovakia, although, in its last full financial year to 23 February, the country was the only of its regional markets to see sales increase.

CEO Philip Clarke admitted Tesco had slowed its expansion in the region amid the "uncertain" economic conditions. The retailer's local operations, Clarke said, needed to "focus hard" on "making more" of their existing businesses.

However, Tesco has insisted the long-term outlook for the region is "looking very good".
