US meat major Tyson Foods is to spend US$26m on expanding its Wright brand bacon facility in Vernon, Texas.

Tyson said the move will create 32 new jobs, bringing the total employment at the plant to more than 800.

Details of the work to be carried out have not been disclosed by Tyson said improvements are scheduled for completion by March.

The company said the expansion is expected to satisfy current demand and allow room for additional growth. It revealed the Wright brand has increased volume by 29% since 2017.

Dane Bonfy, manager of the plant, said: "This project is great news for our plant, our community and our customers."

The Wright brand has been in existence for 90 years and is known for its hand-trimmed and thick-cut, wood smoked bacon.

Noelle O'Mara, group president of prepared foods at Tyson, said: "We're pleased we can continue to build on the proud heritage of this iconic and delicious brand."

Tyson, also home to brands such as Jimmy Dean and Hillshire Farm, operates ten food processing plants in Texas, employing more than 12,000 people. The company also contracts with more than 230 poultry growers and more than 90 cattle suppliers in the state.

In November, Tyson set out plans to up its spending on its overseas production, both in conventional and alternative protein. Tyson is building new factories in China and Thailand to produce cooked-chicken products. The company is also expanding an existing site in the Netherlands, a project that will see the facility make chicken and plant-based protein products.
