A researcher in the US has developed an edible food wrapping that could be in US stores by the end of the year.

The envelope-shaped wraps, made out of a highly concentrated puree of a fruit or vegetable, are suitable for covering sandwiches or protecting meat in home freezers, says creator Tara McHugh, a scientist with the US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service in California.

To make the wraps more water-resistant, McHugh has added vegetable oils, which naturally repel water, reported foodanddrinkeurope.com.

The wraps, which are biodegradable, come in a variety of flavours, including broccoli, carrot, tomato, mango, peach, pear, apple and strawberry.

McHugh’s work is published in the ChemMatters magazine, which is published by the American Chemical Society.
