Starbucks Coffee Company (Nasdaq:SBUX) has been listed as one of the top “hit” product brands in Japan for the year 2000 by Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei), Japan’s most respected and influential business daily.
Starbucks was the only coffee company to be named by the Nikkei newspaper in its annual list of the top “hit” products, which were selected based on consumer preference, sales and brand presence. In a newspaper story published on Dec. 26, 2000, Starbucks was recognized as having built “a high brand image” in the country.
In the Super Goods of the Year 2000 Award by the Japanese merchandise publication Mono Magazine, Frappuccino® was named the winner in the food category. The article accompanying the awards, which was published in December, described Frappuccino® beverages as having the “taste of authentic coffee with refreshing coldness…and a unique texture.” Starbucks was also complimented for successfully setting the trend for coffee shops in Japan.
“We are extremely honored by the awards from Nikkei and Mono Magazine,” said Yuji Tsunoda, president of Starbucks Coffee Japan. “We are very inspired by the incredible accolades that we have received in Japan as they validate the growing relevance of the Starbucks coffee experience in the lives of our customers.”
“We are very excited to receive the top awards from two of Japan’s most prestigious publications,” said Pedro Man, president of Starbucks Coffee Asia Pacific Ltd. “The recognition from both publications in these very early days of our growth cycle in Japan is both surprising and gratifying. Since opening our first store in Japan in August 1996, we have been amazed by the overwhelming acceptance of the Starbucks brand by our Japanese customers.”
Earlier this year, Starbucks was ranked the most preferred restaurant chain in Tokyo, Japan, by Nikkei Restaurants, one of Japan’s most far-reaching and highly respected food service industry publications. Recently, in Korea, Starbucks received the best product of the year award for 2000 in the latest annual “hit” product contest conducted by Korea’s most respected and widely read newspaper, the Joongang Daily Newspaper.
