Blue Bunny ice cream maker to add two production lines at Iowa plant

US ice cream maker Well Enterprises has confirmed it is moving ahead with plans for a US$40m expansion of its South Ice Cream plant in the city of Le Mars in Iowa.

The company, which produces brands including Blue Bunny, Bomb Pop and Sweet Freedom, said the plans include the addition of two new production lines to the existing 39 and will see "significant investments and various improvements to the manufacturing facility". The project is expected to create 81 jobs.

A Wells spokesperson said the expansion plans have been backed by a $3m award from the Iowa Economic Development Authority under its high-quality jobs programme. The city of Le Mars is providing a "local match tax abatement for the project", the spokesperson said.

"Wells is grateful to the state of Iowa and the city of Le Mars for supporting our efforts to grow, and as we move forward, we expect to continue contributing positively to the state and local economy as we have for well over 100 years," the spokesperson said.

Wells said last year that it intended to boost production capabilities in Le Mars to help the company remain "competitive in the ice cream industry today and going forward".
