Grocery behemoth Woolworths has donated A$1m (US$552,000) to the University of Tasmania to fund the appointment of an IT professor for ten years.

The move represents the first private funding deal of its kind in Tasmania, and University vice-chancellor Don McNicol told the Hobart Mercury that he hoped other companies would soon follow Woolworths' lead.

Woolworths' former regional manager Michael Kent explained why the supermarket was keen to fund an IT chair: "Woolworths is basically run by computers."

A global search for the new professor, who will have to do work relevant to Tasmanian business and industry, will soon be undertaken.
