The group wants the Food and Drug Administration to develop a policy so that reduced carbohydrate foods that do not qualify as “low calorie” or “reduced calorie” bear disclaimers revealing that fact.


They also want action by the Federal Trade Commission on deceptive advertising, including “net carb” statements that omit sugar alcohols, glycerine, and soluble fibre. Carb-related claims are not currently regulated by the FDA, and the NCL fears consumers are making unwise purchasing decisions and are vulnerable to misleading labelling practices in this multi-billion dollar industry segment.
