US bakery-café chain Panera Bread said it hosted a “Wellness and Nutrition” workshop this week at its Englewood outlet as the company tries to boost sales amid the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets.

The company said the aim of the workshop was “to help customers sort through the plethora of dietary terms used and to maintain a healthy lifestyle without resorting to drastic dietary programs requiring total elimination of important food groups”.
Many companies that make or sell mainly carbohydrate-based foods have been suffering as a result of the popularity of low-carb diets such as Atkins. Earlier this week Interstate Bakeries, which makes Wonder Bread and Twinkies, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, partly due to weak demand for bread products.
