A Warburtons spokesperson told just-food today (21 April): “After much consideration, we have made the extremely difficult decision to enter into a period of consultation on the proposed closure of our Giles bakery, which makes a range of own-label products including garlic baguettes. This proposal is a result of significant ongoing challenges facing the business and is despite considerable time and financial investment,” the spokesperson said.

“All 218 employees have been briefed and we will work closely with them throughout the 45-day consultation process. This proposal does not impact the Giles bakery in Warminster.”

Warburtons acquired Giles Foods for an undisclosed sum in 2013 as part of what it said were plans to diversify its business.

Last month, Warburtons was given the green light to build a research and development centre and test bakery adjoining its Bolton headquarters in north-west England.
