US family-owned meat processor Fisher Meats is investing in increasing its smoked meat production capacity.

The company is developing a 26,000 square-foot facility in Redkey, Indiana to house its smoked meat operations. The company plans to launch “full operations” at the facility this month.

Fisher is also renovating its existing production facility in Portland, which will focus on fresh meat processing.

The company said the investment comes in response to growing demand for locally produced meat and “farm-to-table” initiatives, as well as increased distribution of its meats.

According to details published on the Indiana state website, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Fisher up to US$100,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. These incentives are performance-based, the state noted.

Indiana secretary of commerce Jim Schellinger said: “As a state that works, Indiana offers homegrown companies like Fisher Meats a pro-growth, affordable business climate and a skilled Hoosier workforce. Preserving the state’s infrastructure while investing in long-term improvements will be yet another benefit of doing business in Indiana, ensuring our job creators are able to reach customers across the state and around the country.”
