Australian supermarket operator Foodland Associated has reported a 6.2% rise in quarterly sales from continuing operations.

The company, which operates stores in Australia and New Zealand, said sales from continuing operations were A$1.47bn (US$1.05bn) in the fourth quarter to 1 August, compared to $1.38bn in the year-ago period, reported Dow Jones International News.

Sales at Foodland’s supermarkets increased 7.3% to $1.16bn, while sales at its wholesale operations rose 2.1% to $1.47bn.

“In New Zealand, the combination of new store openings, consolidation of store brands and refurbishments, together with selective pricing activity, is producing the sales and market share growth we targeted,” the company’s managing director Trevor Coates was quoted by Dow Jones as saying.

“In Australia, we have been able to partially counter a spike in fuel discounting activity and price competition through store refurbishments and extension of our customer loyalty program,” he added.
