Nomad Foods, the European frozen food group, is looking to shut a plant in Bjuv in western Sweden.

The company has asked for talks with trade unions about “a potential closure” of the factory and its pea processing operations by the end of the year.

The site, a former Findus Group facility, produces vegetable and meal products for the retail and foodservice channels in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Nomad Foods is planning to move the site’s production to facilities in Reken and Bremerhaven in Germany. The company said the consolidation of the operations is expected to create “a more efficient supply chain.”

Nomad Foods CEO Stéfan Descheemaeker added: “Optimising our manufacturing footprint is a critical step towards achieving our objectives and today we have announced that we have requested negotiations with the relevant trade unions about a potential closure of the Bjuv manufacturing plant in Sweden. Regrettably, should the factory close, this would involve the loss of approximately 500 jobs. We are committed to supporting our employees through this difficult period.”

Nomad Foods struck a GBP500m cash-and-shares deal to buy much of Findus’s operations in Europe last year.
