The Forum for the Future has brought together various parties – including the likes of Hershey, Volac and Quorn Foods – to look at how the food industry can meet the protein needs of the growing global population.

The non-profit organisation is launching ‘The Protein Challenge 2014’, a collaborative “across the protein system” that hopes to help develop sustainable protein sources. Other participants include retailers Target and Waitrose, ingredients firm Firmenich and GGOs WWF and GAIN.

Research already undertaken as part of the programme has pinpointed six areas for innovation. These include: increasing plant-based protein consumption, sustainable feed innovation for animal rearing, cutting waste from the protein system, developing indigenous plants as sources of protein, scaling up aquaculture for food and feed, and restoring soil health.

Andy Richardson, head of corporate affairs at Volac, said: “Protein is essential for human health, but the current state of how it’s produced and consumed is just not sustainable in the long term. The Protein Challenge 2040 is a unique and exciting opportunity for stakeholders across the protein system to address its challenges together and scale up interventions, best practice and innovation.”

The coalition is now looking for additional partners.
