Romania’s food and drink production will receive €4.72bn (US$5.70bn) in European Union (EU) payments over 2007-2009, under an agreement with the European Commission helping the country to join the EU by the end of 2006.

The deal on agricultural matters would see €3.92bn allocated for Common Agricultural Policy supports and rural development, and around €800m in regional aid.

It would also allow Romania to protect within the EU traditional names of certain milk, yoghurt, butter-milk, cheese, salami, sausages, bread, pretzels, pie, and processed fruit products. It would also have three years to ensure 56 meat and dairy plants meet EU standards.
