Waitrose plans to open more outlets in the Middle East this year, the UK retailer’s managing director has revealed.
Speaking to just-food, Mark Price said the upmarket grocer is eyeing two more stores in the United Arab Emirates with its local partner Spinneys, the Lebanon-based food retailer.
“The plan this year is that they are looking to open a couple more shops in UAE – in Abu Dhabi and Dubai,” Price said.
Waitrose opened its first stores in the Middle East in Dubai in 2008. The chain is now also present in Bahrain, where the first outlet was opened last month.
The retailer, which on Wednesday reported a 5% fall in annual profits, sells Waitrose-branded lines to over 30 markets, which now include the US, to where it has started exporting products.
