Northern Foods saw underlying group revenue rise 3.5% during the three months to 29 December.

Sales from its chilled division climbed 5.2% as rising sandwiches and salad sales offset slower growth in ready meals, Northern Foods said.

The company’s bakery business was boosted by seasonal demand over Christmas and price hikes, which offset lower sales volumes from its branded biscuits. Sales from the division were up 4.2%.

However, the Goodfella’s pizza maker saw sales from its frozen business dip 0.9% as price hikes, brought in to cover rising commodity costs, hit volumes.
