UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has regained a slice of market share over the Christmas period, while Tesco held on to its dominant position.

According to the latest industry date by market research firm TNS, Sainsbury’s had a market share of 16.4% in the 12 weeks to 4 January, down from 17.2% a year earlier, but up from 16.1% a month ago, reported Reuters.


Tesco, meanwhile, held on to its share of 26.9% from a month ago, compared to its market share of 25.8% a year earlier.


Second-placed Asda, owned by US retail giant Wal-Mart, recorded a market share of 17%, up from 16.8% a month ago and 16.6% a year earlier.


Wm Morrison’s market share was 6.4%, unchanged from a month ago, but up 6% from a year ago, while Safeway’s market share dropped to 8.9% from 9.2% a month ago and 9.8% a year earlier.
