American retail giant Wal-Mart, owner of the UK Asda supermarket chain, is to launch a pilot project where it will sell used cars at five of its branches in Houston, Texas.
As part of the company’s one-stop-shopping policy, it will aims to sell vehicles without haggling and at prices that are below the going rate.
Forecourts will be set up next to existing Wal-Mart shops, and will be named Price 1 Auto Store. The six month test will start next month (May), and will be operated in partnership with Asbury Automotive Group, one of the largest US dealership networks.
Wal-Mart’s diversification has already seen it offer on-site petrol stations, cafes and bank branches.
An Asda spokesman said that the UK operation had no plans to sell new or used cars through the company’s UK supermarkets.
