US food company J M Smucker has announced rises in sales and net income for the second quarter and six months ended 31 October 2005.

Net sales for the quarter were $606m, compared with $589m in the same period last year. Sales in the half were $1.117bn, compared with $1.002bn a year ago.

Net income for the quarter was $46m, compared with $38m last year while income for the half was $76m, compared with $71m last year.

“The performance of our businesses continues to offset the significant investments we are making in support of the brands and in our supply chain initiatives and the cost pressures currently impacting the consumer packaged goods sector,” said Tim Smucker, chairman and co-chief executive officer. “We are well-positioned for continuing top and bottom line growth.”
