Australia is to allow imports of pig meat from a greater number of countries under strict import regulations, the government has said.

The government’s biosecurity unit said new quarantine regulations will tighten controls on pig meat imports, but allow imports from more countries, reported Reuters.


At the moment, only Canada, Denmark and New Zealand are allowed to export pig meat to Australia. Biosecurity Australia did not say which other countries may be added to that list in future.


Any countries wanting to export pig meat to Australia would still have to meet strict requirements on animal health, veterinary services, and inspection and certification procedures.
