UK sandwich retail chain Greggs has said it has made a satisfactory start to the year, with results to date ahead of the year-ago period.

“Growth in like-for-like sales and total sales continues in line with that reported in March, in spite of the poor weather,” said chairman Derek Netherton at the group’s annual meeting.

So far this year the company has opened 21 shops and closed 12, including six unprofitable Bakers Oven outlets in Scotland. The company now has around 1,240 outlets, and expects to add a net total of 30 shops to its portfolio during 2004.

Greggs also said initial consumer response to its updated Greggs brand had been encouraging.
