Rules on when seeds used by food producers should be labelled as containing genetically modified material have been proposed by the European Commission and are being examined by the European Union’s standing committee on seeds, which has the authority to approve or reject the proposal.

It has been written by the Commission into a directive on the issue, which says that seeds containing more than 0.3% to 0.7% GM organisms, depending on the species, would have to be labelled as genetically modified.

The proposal has upset organic food production groups, because in its current shape the directive would apply to organic seeds, meaning seeds labelled as ‘organic’ seeds could actually contain some GM material.
