Imports of frozen French fries to the US are down by more than half this year, along with increased exports of potato chips, helping tilt America’s potato trade from a US$50m deficit into a $60m surplus.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, fry imports will go from $155m last year to $69m, and potato chip exports will exceed imports by about $91m.
The shifting balance is a result of decreased Canadian production, and higher export values and volumes. Canada still dominates total US potato imports, accounting for 82% this year, followed by Mexico and the Netherlands. Japan, Canada, and Mexico account for about $540m or 65% of total US potato exports.
