Major French egg supplier Matines is to close after failing to find a buyer.

One of the largest egg businesses in France, Matines sells into the country’s retail and foodservice markets.

In a statement issued by Matines’ parent, French agri-food company Groupe Avril, the egg processor has faced “significant economic difficulties” for “several years” and has decided on “a project of voluntary cessation of all of its activities”.

Restructuring efforts failed to pay off, Avril noted, as did attempts to find a buyer.

Avril said: “Aware of its responsibilities vis-à-vis its employees, its customers and its suppliers, in particular breeders, the company has decided to commit to a planned shutdown of its activities, as part of an amicable agreement, presented to staff representatives and employees.

“The presentation of this project means the opening of discussions with staff representatives and the launch of an information-consultation procedure, at the end of which the effective cessation of the company’s activities could take place, in the fall of 2022, through the sale or closure of its establishments.”

On a positive note, Avril said its animal-nutrition arm Sanders would take over its packaging site and staff in the French town of Naizin.

Sanders is planning “for the development of an egg packaging service activity by a new company on behalf of several companies marketing eggs in supermarkets”.

Overall, the closure of Matines could affect 114 jobs, Avril said. Matines has 172 workers at three packing sites, a warehouse and two offices.
