Struggling UK supermarket group Wm Morrison faces major disruption as members of the T&G and GMB unions voted in favour of strikes over plans to cut jobs at three of the chain’s distribution depots.

The GMB union said it feared 2,500 jobs were under threat by the supermarket’s plan to streamline its distribution network, reported Reuters. The GMB and T&G unions balloted members on industrial action this week, and will meet to discuss what form the action should take.
“Since acquiring Safeway we have sold over 180 stores, and the reality is that we have more depot space and capacity than we need,” Morrisons said in defence of its plans.
The unions say strikes at depots in Bristol, Cheshire and Wakefield could lead to empty supermarket shelves. Morrisons said it has contingency plans, but could not speculate on the impact on a strike, reported Reuters.
