Associated British Foods has launched a lower-fat version of its perennial favourite, Ovaltine.
The new variety is made by adding water rather than milk, which reduces the fat and calorie profile of the drink. It complements the Ovaltine Chocolate Add Water variety and is available in 300g jars and single-serve sachets.
Sources at the company commented that a fourth variety might soon be in the pipeline. This would be an add-milk variety of Ovaltine Chocolate, to complete the range.
Rich in folic acid and other vitamins and minerals, one of Ovaltine’s target markets is women who are planning to become pregnant or who are in the first trimester of pregnancy. Folic acid is taken during this time to help prevent neural tube defects in babies.
Ovaltine (or Ovomaltine, to give it its original name) was developed by a Swiss chemist in 1904. It is still sold under the Ovomaltine brand in many markets.
