Supermarket chain The Kroger is the latest food firm vowing to use trans fat free oil, to fry chicken prepared in its stores.

Kroger said that the trans fat free oil it will use retains the flavour of the chicken, without compromising taste.

Fried chicken dinners, chicken wings and chicken tenders will be prepared using trans fat free oil in Kroger supermarkets under banner names including City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s.

Responding to growing customer interest, both McDonald’s in Europe and KFC in the US have made similar trans fat free pledges over the past month.

Recent studies show that diets high in trans fats can lead to increased risk of heart disease and other health issues.
