The consumer magazine today (2 November) revealed the results of an investigation into 20 top-selling cereal bars, which found they were all high in sugar and more than half were also high in saturated fat. Every cereal bar tested contained levels of sugar that would earn them a red light under the Food Standards Agency’s traffic light nutritional labelling scheme.

“We found that a nutritious-looking Kellogg’s Fruit ‘n Fibre Bar contained more sugar per bar (10g) than a chocolate Penguin bar (9.7g). And Nesquik Cereal & Milk Bar and Nestlé Golden Grahams Cereal & Milk Bar both had 2.1g of saturated fat per bar. That’s more saturates than a Mr Kipling Almond Slice,” Which? said in a statement.

Kellogg declined to comment while Nestlé said that it has been cutting fat and sugar levels in cereal and milk bars and will continue to do so in the next year.
