Tim Bennett, president of the National Farmers’ Union, has been appointed as a member of the council of Food from Britain by Margaret Beckett, secretary of state, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the department said.
Food from Britain serves as the market development consultancy for British food and drink producers.
FFB receives a Government grant through DEFRA of £5.4m (US$9.4m) to maximise exports of food and drink produced in the United Kingdom. FFB has received an additional £3m from DEFRA for 2003/06 to support the quality regional food sector.
Tim Bennett, who farms in Camarthen, West Wales, was elected president of the NFU in 2004, having served as deputy president for six years.
“I am pleased to announce Tim Bennett as a new member of Food from Britain’s council,” Beckett said. “The range of experience he brings to the role will help Food from Britain continue to deliver a quality service, and help us to promote excellence in British food.”
