Cheese produces from the Italian provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna and Mantova have called for a meeting with agriculture minister Giovanni Alemanno to the market for Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, the ANSA news agency reported.
Parmigiano Reggiano cheese producers have been suffering from falling consumption and prices registered in 2004. The five provinces want a plan for supporting the Parmigiano Reggiano makers to be examined.
Producer prices fell by 20% during the period November 2003 to January 2005, to €7.80 ($9.40) per kg from €9.80 per kg, while consumer prices fell, during the same period, by 3.7%.
