US food giant Kraft has been accused of engaging in “labour fraud” at its Zamora fresh-cheese factory in Spain and received an EUR3,000 (US$3,762.58) fine, the plant’s workers committee chief Jorge San Martin told just-food on yesterday (11 October).

San Martin said the city’s labour officials have summoned the company to court to respond to the charges. The suit claims Kraft has hired too many temporary workers at the site where there aren’t enough fixed contracts. It also alleges other “contract irregularities,” including some in which workers were given temporary contracts for roles that should have been offered fixed wages, San Martin added.

Kraft employs 90-120 people at the factory, which is significantly smaller than its biggest plant in Leon where it makes cheese, mayonnaise and its Tang powdered drink.
