The UK’s Food Standards Agency has entered into a dialogue with the European Commission’s directorate general for health and consumer protection regarding the way that dietary health, nutrition and food issues are handled.

Speaking at the FSA’s open board meeting, the food standards watchdog’s chair Dame Deirdre Hutton said that she had attended a meeting at DG Sanco (European Commission Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection) on 13 September.
Hutton said this was a positive and constructive meeting, in which the Commission expressed general satisfaction with the agency’s approach to risk-based enforcement. The meeting explored the question of proportionality and all the difficult ‘judgement issues’.
Hutton revealed that the EC was interested in the FSA’s stance on front-of-pack labelling with regard to the pan-European measures it is planning on the issue.
Hutton concluded by expressing a hope that this meeting will lead to improved cooperation in the future.
