The products, which had previously been recalled and quarantined due to the contamination, had been inadvertently re-distributed due to a distribution error, the agency said.

The products had been subject to a recall during the Sudan I incident in February 2005 as they had incorporated Worcester sauce that had been contaminated with Sudan I. On 18 February 2005 the products, frozen Spaghetti Bolognese and frozen Shepherds Pie, were included on the list of affected products published by the agency.

As a result of the initial recall, these products were returned to a central distribution depot. It is from this depot that the products have been inadvertently redistributed. As soon as Spar UK Ltd became aware of this error they instigated a product withdrawal. In addition, point of sale notices are to be displayed in the Spar stores that received the products, in order to make consumers aware of the withdrawal.
