Dutch retail giant Ahold has said its net sales declined 1.0% to €13.0bn (US$16.5bn) for the first quarter of 2005.

The company said net sales for the first quarter to 24 April 2005 were impacted by lower currency exchange rates, in particular that of the US dollar. Net sales excluding currency impact increased by 2.6% in the first quarter of 2005.


Net sales at Ahold’s Albert Heijn supermarket chain in the Netherlands increased 4.9% to €1.8bn. Net sales at the company’s US Foodservice unit increased by 0.9% to US$5.6bn.
