Japan’s pasta market was worth an estimated US$3.8bn in 2005, and is expected to fall to US$3.5bn by 2009, the research company predicted.

Datamonitor declined to say why it thinks pasta consumption will drop so suddenly, but a Japan analyst told just-food it has much to do with Japan’s falling birthrate.

During 2002 the Japanese consumed a record 249,000 tons of pasta, of which imports accounted for 101,400 tonnes. That increase, according to the Japan Pasta Association, is owing in part to more Japanese food companies setting up factories abroad.
