Singapore will lift a ban on imports of poultry and eggs from the Malaysian states of Selangor and Negri Sembilan with effect from 14 April 2005, its Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority announced today.

AVA has inspected Negri Sembilan and Selangor and has assessed that all the necessary measures have been put in place to establish and maintain these two states
as bird flu free zones, it said. This is similar to the approach adopted for lifting the ban on export of poultry and eggs from Johore, Malacca and Perak.
The control measures that Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services has implemented to establish Selangor and Negri Sembilan as bird flu free zones include
strict biosecurity measures maintained on the AVA-accredited farms, disease surveillance conducted by DVS in these states, effective measures to control the interstate and intrastate movement of poultry and poultry products (including eggs) through the use of movement permits approved by DVS.
Accredited farms in Selangor and Negri Sembilan are inspected by DVS before it issues export permits and health certificates to certify freedom of disease for each consignment of poultry or eggs. Every export consignment is inspected by DVS prior to entry into Singapore.
AVA will inspect all import consignments again upon entry to Singapore. The many layers of checks, at the accredited farms and at the export and import checkpoints, will help to minimize the risks of infected poultry consignments entering Singapore undetected, AVA said. With lifting of the import suspension, 11 chicken broiler farms, and 1 layer farm in Selangor and Negri Sembilan are approved to export 651,000 broilers and 4.86 million table eggs to Singapore per month.

The resumption of imports from Selangor and Negri Sembilan will, however, only apply to commercial consignments from the accredited farms. Members of the public are reminded that the ban on individuals bringing in poultry and poultry products from Malaysia still remains.
