The decline was narrower than the 3.7% drop in March same-store sales, as the company tries to increase sales at existing restaurants through new offerings and improved food and service.

The company said same-store sales at its US restaurants rose 1.3%, while those at restaurants in Europe, McDonald’s second-largest market after the US, fell 2.3%. In the company’s Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa reporting region, same-store sales fell 6.9% in constant currencies.

Total sales, meanwhile, rose 8% to US$3.6bn, as sales in Europe were boosted by the weak dollar. Europe’s sales also benefited from the late timing of the Easter school holidays, which were in April this year but March last year.
