UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s continues to be beaten in terms of sales growth by rivals Tesco and Asda, according to the latest sales data.

The data from industry researcher Taylor Nelson Sofres, based on till receipts provided by the industry, showed Sainsbury’s market share was 16.8% in the 12 weeks to 22 June, compared to 17.7% in the year-ago period.


The retailer’s till receipts were flat on the year-earlier period at £2.66bn (US$4.42bn).


Tesco, however, increased its share of the grocery sector to 26.9%, from 25.9% a year earlier. Its till receipts totalled £4.25bn, a rise of 9% year-on-year.


Asda, owned by US retail giant Wal-Mart, saw its market share rise to 16.3% from 15.5% a year earlier. Its till receipts totalled £2.57bn, a rise of 10% compared to the year-ago period.
