The head of Brazilian supermarket operator Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao (CBD) has said he is keen to buy Bompreco, one of the Brazilian retail chains being sold by Dutch retail giant Ahold.
“We’re in the running and we hope to win,” Abilio Diniz, the chairman of CBD, told local newswire Agencia Estado.
France’s Carrefour and US retailer Wal-Mart are also believed to be interested in acquiring Bompreco, but Diniz said CBD’s knowledge of the Brazilian retail market would given them an advantage, reported Dow Jones International News.
CBD is Brazil’s biggest food retailer, followed by Carrefour. Wal-Mart has a relatively small presence in Brazil, with around 20 stores.
Bompreco has around 87 supermarkets and 28 hypermarkets. Ahold also operates a smaller G Barbosa retail chain in Brazil, with 32 stores, and a Hipercard credit card business.
