UK convenience food maker Northern Foods plc today (Monday) announced that Peter Blackburn will retire as chairman as well as from the board at the company’s AGM in July 2005. He will be succeeded by Tony Hobson, deputy chairman.

Peter Blackburn, aged 64, joined the board in November 2001 and became chairman in February, 2002. Tony Hobson joined the board in May 2002 as deputy chairman and senior independent director.  He is currently a non-executive director of HBOS plc, Sage Group plc, JLT Group plc and Glas Cymru, the not-for-profit Welsh water company.  Previously he was group finance director of Legal & General Group plc from 1987 to 2001.

“I have decided that the time is right for me to stand down as we are now at the start of a three year plan to realise the benefits of our recent strategic review,” said Peter Blackburn. “During my time as chairman the company has had significant change and made good progress in restructuring and refocussing the business to realise its full potential. I leave the company in good hands with Pat O`Driscoll, who assumed the role of chief executive in March, 2004, and Tony Hobson, in whom I have every confidence in delivering our plans and ambitions.”

Tony Hobson said “I am delighted to take on the appointment as chairman of Northern Foods and I look forward to working with Pat O`Driscoll and her team.”
