US retail titan Wal-Mart has reported a 9.0% rise in January sales to US$19.8bn, with sales at Wal-Mart stores in the US rising 10.7% to $13.2bn.

The world’s biggest retailer said sales at Sam’s Club stores rose 1.4% to $2.5bn in the four-week period to 28 January, compared to a year earlier, while the company’s international sales rose 8.6% to $4.1bn.


Comparable sales rose 3.2% at Wal-Mart stores in the US, while comparable sales at Sam’s Club slid 0.8% in the four weeks, compared to the year-ago period. Total US comparable sales rose 2.5%.


Total company sales for the fifty-two weeks to 28 January 2005 were up 11.2% to $284.8bn.


For the February four-week period, the company has forecast comparative sales for the US to be up in the 2 to 4% range.
