Around 300 new jobs will be created at 30 new photo centres representing an investment of £5m and bringing the total numbers of centres to 140. A further 30 stores will receive jewellery departments, creating 400 jobs and requiring an investment by the retailer of £1.6m. This will mean a total of 210 stores will have a jewellery counter by the end of the year. Self select units in other stores will mean that 258 out of 274 Asda stores will have a jewellery range, the same amount that currently have George clothing.
Six further stores will have optical departments at a cost of just over £400,000 creating 60 jobs and bringing the total number of stores with opticians to 85.
With expansion possibilities limited in the food retail segment, the UK’s largest supermarket chains have been extending their offer to non-food areas in a bid to win customers.
