UK supermarket company Asda, a subsidiary of US retail giant Wal-Mart, has announced it is to create 1,200 new full-time jobs in its distribution network this year in order to better supply its 260 UK stores.

The company, which has planned a £200m (US$321.4m) investment in the distribution network, will refurbish two depots at Grangemouth and Falkirk in Scotland to create 600 jobs, as well as creating 500 jobs at a new distribution centre in Lutterworth, central England.
Asda said it would also create 100 jobs at two recycling sites at Wigan and Wakefield in northern England and transfer 500 jobs to a new chilled distribution centre at Skelmersdale from an existing facility at nearby Wigan.
“This year we will revolutionise our distribution network,” David Gibbons, Asda’s distribution director, was quoted by Reuters as saying. “Wal-Mart technology means we can get products into our stores faster and more efficiently than ever.”
